Sexual Abuse is a type of sexual violence that affects thousands of men, women, and children each year. In fact, in Chicago alone, there were over 1700 reported sexual assaults in 2017.

Sexual Abuse includes:

  • Rape

  • Forced sexual acts of any nature

  • Groping and unwanted touching,

  • Any unwanted penetration of the victim

  • Forced sexual conversation and pornography viewing

  • Sexual exploitation

In the case of forced assault, force is not limited to physical pressure.  Emotional coercion, manipulation, intimidation or other psychological force may also be used.

Some Common Locations Where Sexual Abuse May Occur:

  • Health Care Providers and Hospitals

  • Spas

  • Schools

  • Places of Worship

  • Day Care Facilities

  • Nursing Homes

  • Places of Employment

There are also warning signs you should keep in mind to protect yourself and others from potential sexual assault:

  • Individuals who intend to commit sexual assault typically try to lull their victim into a false sense of security before making a move, or they may use flattery and attention to get the victim to lower his or her guard.

  • Some offenders use alcohol or other substances to reduce resistance from their victims.

  • Offenders will often attempt to isolate their victims, both for spontaneous attacks and as part of long-term abusive relationships

  • Offenders often rely on manipulation and confusion to shift responsibility onto the victim after a sexual assault.

WHAT TO DO AS A VICTIM OF SEXUAL ABUSE

Victims may wonder what to do after experiencing sexual abuse. The most important action that a victim must take is to immediately report the incident to your local police. Speaking up about a sexual crime increases the chances of the offender facing prosecution and conviction. This will help prevent future sexual harm being done to someone else.
